Refurbishments

YouthBuild South Africa (YBSA) implements refurbishment projects using a Community Asset Development approach that combines skills development for young people with meaningful improvements to schools and community infrastructure. Through these projects, unemployed youth with technical qualifications in Civil and Building Construction, Electrical, Welding, and Boiler making gain hands-on experience while contributing to the revitalisation of their communities.

Our refurbishment initiatives focus on schools, informal trading facilities, and other community infrastructure, transforming under-resourced spaces into safe, functional, and inspiring environments. These improved spaces support learning, entrepreneurship, innovation, and community well-being.

Project Objectives

Through our refurbishment projects, YBSA aims to:

  • Create safe and dignified spaces where learners, educators, and entrepreneurs feel valued.
  • Enable innovation and creativity by improving learning and working environments.
  • Build skills, confidence, and employability among vulnerable and unemployed youth.
  • Instil a sense of hope, purpose, and pride within communities.
  • Contribute to long-term community and national transformation.
Skills Development and Community Impact

These projects are designed to transfer practical and technical skills to young people, opening pathways to sustainable employment, entrepreneurship, and further learning. At the same time, youth develop leadership, strong work ethics, civic responsibility, and essential soft skills required in the workplace. Community Asset Building projects create visible and lasting improvements through the repair, maintenance, and upgrading of identified school and community / municipal facilities. While youth gain real-world experience, communities benefit from improved infrastructure that supports education and local economic activity.

Typical Refurbishment Activities

Refurbishment and maintenance work may include:

  • Minor refurbishment and painting of schools, informal trading facilities, and other community assets.
  • Repair and installation of basic infrastructure such as toilet pans, basins, windows, and doors.
  • Repair of ceilings, leaking roofs, and damaged structures.
  • Security upgrades, including burglar bars and window improvements.

This approach ensures that every refurbishment project delivers dual impact: empowering young people with market-relevant skills while strengthening the schools and community spaces that form the backbone of South African society.

Construction

YouthBuild South Africa’s (YBSA) General Construction Programme delivers high-quality community infrastructure while equipping young people with practical construction skills and real-world experience. Through this programme, YBSA contributes to the development of safe, functional, and dignified spaces that support education, community life, and local development in both urban and rural communities.

Construction programme objectives:
  • Construct new classrooms, ablution facilities, school halls, and computer laboratories to improve learning environments and access to education.
  • Address the shortage of community housing by constructing safe and affordable homes.
  • Develop multi-purpose community halls and sporting facilities to support social cohesion, recreation, and community development.
  • Provide opportunities for hands-on training to youth, giving them practical experience in construction, project management, and compliance with industry standards.
  • Ensure projects meet NHBRC standards and adhere to national regulations, delivering durable and safe infrastructure for communities.
Professional delivery and quality assurance

To ensure quality, safety, and compliance, YBSA partners with a team of qualified industry professionals, including civil engineers, architects, and construction specialists, who guide project design, implementation, and supervision. Youth participants work alongside these professionals, gaining valuable on-site experience while meeting industry standards.

YBSA is registered with the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) and has a proven track record in delivering community infrastructure. Our experience enables us to manage projects from planning to completion, ensuring durable, compliant, and community-owned outcomes.
