impacting lives, building communities
The National Youth Service (NYS) Programme forms a core part of YouthBuild SA’s mission to empower young people through service, skills development, and community transformation. NYS provides unemployed youth with a structured platform to gain work experience, develop life skills, and actively contribute to rebuilding their communities. For YouthBuild SA, the programme is more than a work opportunity—it is a holistic development pathway that builds character, leadership capacity, and long-term employability.
The program targets youth between the ages of 18 and 35 who are not in employment, education, or training (NEET). Participants are often from vulnerable communities with limited access to opportunities. YouthBuild works intentionally with these young people to provide:
YouthBuild SA implements NYS through a youth-centred, asset-based, and community-driven approach:
For YouthBuild SA, the NYS Programme delivers powerful, multi-level impact. Participants gain confidence, leadership, and purpose, strengthen work readiness and professionalism, acquire practical and technical skills, build credible work experience, and access pathways into employment, entrepreneurship, or further study. Communities benefit from improved infrastructure and facilities, stronger food security initiatives, safer and cleaner shared spaces, and expanded youth-led after-school and community support. At a national level, the programme contributes directly to South Africa’s development agenda by reducing youth unemployment, increasing civic participation, strengthening community resilience, and nurturing a new generation of young leaders committed to nation-building.
YouthBuild integrates proven, evidence-based approaches - including leadership training, emotional intelligence, work readiness, problem-solving, communication, and values-driven personal development - to equip young people with the skills that truly matter. Together, these experiences build resilience, strengthen identity, and cultivate professionalism, laying a powerful foundation for long-term personal and career success.
Guided by local needs and strategic partnerships, YouthBuild delivers practical skills training in areas such as agriculture and food security, construction, early childhood development and after-school support, as well as environmental and community greening projects. This locally grounded approach ensures youth gain real, income-generating and employability skills that translate directly into meaningful work and sustainable livelihoods.
A defining element of NYS is service. Through YouthBuild, participants lead and deliver meaningful community projects - from school and community gardens, food production and distribution initiatives, to infrastructure repairs, environmental clean-ups, and after-school tutoring and literacy programmes. This hands-on service builds pride, instils purpose, and strengthens a deep sense of belonging within their communities.
Participants gain meaningful, real-world exposure through partner-led internships, community service placements, industry projects, and job shadowing opportunities. Supported by YouthBuild’s strong network of partners, these experiences enhance employability, build professional confidence, and open clear pathways to sustainable income generation.
YouthBuild’s youth workers and mentors provide dedicated one-on-one coaching, goal-setting guidance, regular mental wellness check-ins, and ongoing monitoring of personal and work performance. This wrap-around support keeps participants motivated, supported, and equipped to successfully complete the programme.
